After reading chapter 6 in Environmentalism of
the Poor, the reality about our oil usage hit me pretty hard.
Although we've had a system going for many years, our luck will, sadly soon run
out. None of these oil issues throughout the world are anything new. It's
hard for people, including myself to believe that is not under perfect control
and there will always be this constant battle.
Wanting to know more about what happened with Unocal, I was able to find
an article with more information. In
2005 there was a confidential settlement where Unocal agreed to compensate the
plaintiffs and provided funds for programs in Burma to improve living
conditions as well as protecting the rights of people from the pipeline
region. The exact terms of the
settlement were confidential and showed me no further information on this case. I found a few more articles talking about the
oil issues and couldn’t really find anything very positive about where the
nations are heading.
Because the
US had the luxury of conventional oil, it needs to be realized that this is a
thing of the past and choices need to be made.
We could develop a more sustainable energy future of renewable fuels or
use the sources of fossil fuels that will cost the health of the citizens as
well as our environment. The NRDC
(Natural Resource Defense Counsel) is actively working to fight the
infrastructure that supports increased production and use of these toxic fuels. Environmentalism
of the Poor has made me aware of the ongoing environmental issues and I
hope that the outcome will not be a brutal one.
